Description
"Cat Herding Ducks" is a recreation of a portion of a 3,200 year old Egyptian comic strip the British Museum refers to as "Animals Behaving Like People". The original ancient artwork features what appear to be two cautionary tales within a cautionary tale, each depicting prey being duped by predatory trickster figures.
Animals in any pose other than their natural states is nearly unheard of in Ancient Egyptian art outside of parodies on limestone ostraca, and papyrus was very expensive and usually reserved for commissioned works. This fanciful doodle by a talented artist on a strip of leftover papyrus makes it one of the world's first true comic strips; I like to imagine the original artist created it to amuse his or her children.
The cat in the "Cat Herding Ducks" panel appears well-fed but carries the crook of a peasant rather than an aristocrat, indicating he's experienced success with this approach to dinner in the past. Normally the ducks would be pintail ducks but I took some license in order to amuse my own child with ducks he's met.
This 8 x 10 inch recreation is hand-painted on authentic, sustainable Egyptian papyrus. Every attempt has been made to make sure the colors on your screen match the original but due to variations on computer displays it may appear differently to you.
