Description
This is an Egyptian family portrait, a mother and father with a toddler. The father pets a lucky black cat. The cat is in a place of honor sitting beside the father as part of the family. This family would receive the protection and favor of the cat-headed goddess Bastet, a good mother responsible for protecting families from contagious diseases. Bastet's city was Bubastis or Per-Pastet/ Tell Basta. This is an original work in period pigments and not in the public domain.
The body language, clothing and skin tones in this painting represent any generic non-royal family with a small child of either gender. Egyptian artists used red and yellow ochre for skin because it was cheap.
This version has a digital border in lamp black, red ochre and yellow ochre. A borderless version is also available.
