Description
This is a black, white and red photograph of an original sculpture entitled, "Impression of Cat", inspired by Ancient Egyptian and Asian art.
Red, black and white were the first colors used by artists in the Upper Paleolithic age, probably because natural pigments such as red ochre and iron oxide were readily available where early people lived.
In ancient Egypt, red was associated with life, health, and victory. Black (khem) was also the color of life as well as fertility, as their culture depended upon the fertile black soil left behind after the Nile's annual flood.
In Ancient China, artisans were making red and black painted pottery as early as the Yangshao Culture period. (5000-3000 BC).
In China, red is the symbol of fire and the south. It carries a largely positive connotation, being associated with courage, loyalty, honor, success, fortune, fertility, happiness, passion, and summer. In Japan, red is a traditional color for a heroic figure.
In ancient China, black was the symbol of North and Water, one of the main five colors. In Japanese culture, kuro (black) is a symbol of nobility, age, and experience.
The original sculpture was placed on a base made from a tree felled by lightning, then painted in red lacquer to offset the brilliant black lacquer of the bathing cat.
This listing is for a print of the photograph. The original sculpture has found a home.
