Description
This piece depicts the Egyptian goddess Isis holding a child. It's hand-painted in acid-free acrylic on sustainable Egyptian papyrus.
Isis is a goddess in Ancient Egyptian religious beliefs whose worship spread throughout the Greco-Roman world. She was worshipped as the ideal mother and wife as well as the patron of nature and magic. She was the friend of slaves, sinners, artisans, and the downtrodden, and she listened to the prayers of the wealthy, maidens, aristocrats, and rulers. Isis is often depicted as the mother of Horus and is also known as protector of the dead and goddess of children.
Although Isis's original headdress was a throne, after she assimilated many of the roles of Hathor, Isis's headdress was replaced with that of Hathor: the horns of a cow on her head, with the solar disk between them. Usually she was depicted with her young child, Horus (the pharaoh).
Ancient sky goddesses who held the title "Queen of Heaven" included Isis, Astarte, Ishtar, and Inanna.
